Pose of the Week: Low Lunge
Sanskrit: AnjanΔeasana
Pronounced: ahn-jah-nay-AH-suh-nuh
AnjaneyΔsana is named for Anjaneya, another name for Hanuman, the devoted monkey hero of the Ramayana. Hanuman is the son of Anjana, and his story is one of devotion, courage, strength, and remembering the power that already lives within us.
In one of the most beloved stories, Hanuman is called upon to leap across the ocean in service of Lord Rama. At first, he forgets his own strength. With encouragement, he remembers who he is β and takes a great, faithful leap.
Low Lunge reflects this same feeling: one leg rooted behind us, one foot stepping forward, the heart lifting. It is a posture of readiness, devotion, and moving forward with courage.
Benefits of Low Lunge
Low Lunge may help:
Improve hip mobility
Stretch the hip flexors and quadriceps
Support posture by opening the front body
Build strength and stability in the legs
Improve balance and coordination
Create more ease in walking and standing
Practice Cue
Step one foot forward and let the back knee lower to the mat or a cushion. Keep your front knee stacked over your ankle. Lengthen your spine, soften your shoulders, and gently lift your chest.
You can place your hands on blocks, a chair, or your front thigh for support.
Breathe into the front of the hip and imagine yourself stepping forward with steadiness, not force.
Chair Option
Stand behind a chair and step one foot back into a supported lunge. Keep both hands lightly resting on the chair. Bend the front knee slightly and lengthen through the back leg.
Reflection
Where in your life are you ready to move forward with more trust?
Sometimes mobility is not just physical. Sometimes it is the willingness to take the next step.
We would love to practice with you this week.
With warmth,
